BEULAH PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH
Located on South 3 Notch Street, south of downtown Troy.
In mid March 1998 we took a trip to Troy, Alabama for research at the library there. While there, we visited the Beulah Primitive Baptist Church. which is the oldest church in Troy. The church was organized in 1831 at a meeting in the home of Lewis Pugh and is located just a few blocks South of the square in downtown Troy. Across the street is the Beulah Cemetery where my great great grandparents, great grandfather and several other relatives are buried.
(Background music is "Mansions On High")

Church Interior This photo shows the pulpit area inside the church. Notice the size of the pulpit. The interior of the church looks much as it would have looked 160 plus years ago. The pews look handmade. The only items in the sanctuary are the pulpit, pews, an old table with four chairs and a small table with a vase of flowers. That's me (Jim) in the pulpit.

Church Exterior Beulah Church is located a couple of hundred feet west of South Three Notch Street just a short distance from downtown Troy, Alabama. The original building was replaced about 1900 then rebuilt about 1953. Standing in front of the church are Lois Blair Martin (my sister), Joe Blair (cousin from Brewton, AL) and Marjorie Taylor Blair (my wife). |
Beulah Cemetery
Across the street from Beulah Church is Beulah Cemetery. Buried there are some of the early leaders of Troy/Pike County, including Ann Love, John Blair and wife Kitty Ann, Leonard Blair, Levi Blair. In addition, there are grave sites for slaves and for some Union soldiers killed in the area. Many of the grave sites have broken or missing stones.
