***Massey***

The Massey family name appears in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066, but the name was taken from their home in Normandy, Macey in Manche.   Savannah Josephine Massey married John Lambertine Blair.

John Massey1  b. 1535 in Cheshire, England and married Elizabeth Ashton b. 1550.  They were married  in Powis, Montgomery, Wales.

William Massey2, (John1) b. 09 August 1580 in Burton in Wirral, Cheshire, England and d. 1649 in Burton, Cheshire, England.  He married Catherine Herbert b. in Powis Castle, Montgomery, Wales.  William died in 1649.

  1. Edward Massey b. 20 December 1612 in Burton in Wirral, Cheshire, England.

Edward massey3, (William2, John1) b. 20 December 1612 in Burton in Wirral, Cheshire, England.  He married Alice Brathwaite who was b. 25 September in Kendal, Westmoreland, England.

  2. Richard Massey, b. 1733 married in Greenville Co., Va to Elizabeth (Polly) Advent b. 01 Jan 1739 in Albermarle Parish, Sussex Co. Va.

Generation 7

Arthur Massey 7, (John6, Joseph5, Richard4, Edward3, William2, John1), was born c. 1736 in Brunswick Co., Virginia; and died Abt. 1801 in Camden Kershaw District, South Carolina.  He married Elizabeth Alston 1760 in Virginia, she was born Abt. 1744 in St. John's Parish, Berkeley County,  South Carolina.  Note: Arthur (4) Massey, born c. 1735 in Brunswick Co., VA, was mentioned in the 1760 estate records of his grandfather Joseph (2) Massey, (middle son of our immigrant ancestor, Richard (1) Massey, 1684 Charles City County, VA),  as receiving payment for some bill or expense.  Arthur witnessed, and proved in court, his father John (3)  Joseph(2), Richard (1)'s 1768 purchase of 50 acres on Horse Creek, Johnston Co., NC.  According to Alston (5) Massey's Rev War pension app.,  Alston described his father's (Arthur(4) move from VA. to South Carolina.

  5. Oliver L. Massey, b. Abt. 1772 in South Carolina and died 21 February 1841  in Hopewell, Perry Co., Alabama;  he m. Keziah Holley, South Carolina.

  6. Nancy Massey, b. Abt. 1774.

  7. Charlotte Massey, b. 25 May 1778, Cheraw, South Carolina; m. William Holley, Cheraw, South Carolina.

Generation 8

Alston S. Massey 8, (Arthur7, John6, Joseph5, Richard4, Edward3, William2, John1), was born Abt. 1762 in Greensville-Brunswick County, Virginia, and died 17 July 1853 in Claiborne, Monroe County, Alabama. He married (1) Unknown. He married (2) Emeline Allen.  Military Service:  War Dept states that Alyston received 160 acres in Monroe Co., Alabama for his service in the Revolution.
